Women-only swim hot topic at Tukwila city pool

SEATTLE — More than 40 people attended a meeting of the Tukwila Pool Metropolitan Park District to urge commissioners to keep separate swim times for men and women.

Some told commissioners last week women need separation for religious reasons.

Few men attend the gender-specific swim that was established last summer, but about 30 women use the pool for a 90-minute female-only swim on Sundays.

A woman who was unable to accompany her 11-year-old son filed a complaint with the state Human Rights Commission. It ruled last week there was no gender discrimination, since the pool offers times for both men and women.

The Seattle Times reports the ruling affected only Tukwila, but it raises questions for other pools that have women-only swim times. Eight pools in King County have women-only swims.
