Letter: New crossing is a critical effort

The Columbian

Are you one of the thousands who are sick of wasting time in the Interstate 5 Bridge traffic jams every morning and evening? Would you like to see a solution to this situation? You were needed at a recent C-Tran board meeting.

I admit, this was the first government meeting I’ve attended. I wanted to show support for Mayor Tim Leavitt, Commissioner Steve Stuart, city council members Bart Hansen and Larry Smith, and Ridgefield Mayor Ron Onslow, who had the courage and foresight to approve a financing package to bring light rail to Clark County and, even more important, continue the momentum to replace the aging and inadequate I-5 Bridge. Not understanding how the meeting worked, I did not come prepared to speak. So instead, I sat and listened for an hour as over a dozen opponents of a new Columbia River Crossing and light rail grilled and threatened the five members who supported the plan.

Board members knew that the light-rail financing package was critical to getting an improved I-5 bridge and corridor. They got their job done and deserved applause for their effort. If you don’t want our current traffic mess to continue, show up at CRC-related meetings and support those who want to correct Clark County’s transportation nightmare.
