POULSBO — Police are asking residents in the Kitsap County city of Poulsbo to help pay for a new drug-sniffing dog.

Police Chief Al Townsend tells KOMO that the dog will help officers find more drugs and make more arrests. Police say heroin use is on the rise, and officers have collected thousands of hypodermic needles around town in recent weeks.

Townsend says the dog would cost $12,000, but that seized drug money could help pay for the animal in the future.

The chief hopes to get a drug dog by spring.
