KUUSAMO, Finland (AP) — Defending ski jump World Cup champion Gregor Schlierenzauer of Austria won for the first time this season.

With a second jump of 143 meters on Friday he beat Germany’s Marinus Kraus by a half point. Schlierenzauer had been 15th after managing only 128 meters in the first round, but he had the day’s longest jump in the second round to finish with 273.2 points.

Kraus was eyeing his first World Cup victory. He led after the first round after a jump of 136 meters before going 133 meters in the second. Austria’s Thomas Morgenstern was ninth after the first round and finished third. Kraus finished with 272.7 points while Morgenstern had 272.3.

Schlierenzauer refused to jump in the first individual event of the season in Germany last weekend because of strong wind.
