Rice tops Santa Clara with last-second layup 67-66

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Keith Washington took the ball coast-to-coast to score the game-winning layup with 0.3 seconds remaining in Rice’s 67-66 victory over Santa Clara in the consolation game of the Cable Car Classic on Saturday.

Washington drove the length of the court after Santa Clara had taken its first lead of the game on Brandon Clark’s layup with 7 seconds to go.

The Owls (3-4) shot 17 of 25 from the field in the first half but went without a field goal for the final 10 minutes of the game before Washington made the game winner in the final second.

Sean Obi was a force down low for the Owls with 17 points on 8-of-9 shooting and nine rebounds. Seth Gearhart added 15, and Max Guercy and Washington each scored 11.

Evan Roquemore led Santa Clara (2-4) with 17 points. Clark added 15 and Jerry Brown had 13.
