SEATTLE (AP) — Top Seattle Mariners pitching prospect Danny Hultzen has undergone surgery on his left shoulder to clean up his labrum and repair a partial tear of his rotator cuff.

The Mariners announced Hultzen underwent the surgery on Tuesday. The surgery was performed by Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Fla. The team said there is no timetable on Hultzen’s recovery.

Hultzen, selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2011 amateur draft, was expected to be the first of Seattle’s young pitching prospects to make his major league debut in 2013 before injuries slowed his progress. He made six starts with Triple-A Tacoma, but four of those came in April and only one came after the end of June. His last appearance for Tacoma came on Sept. 1 when he threw two innings.

Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik says the surgery is unfortunate for Hultzen, but the team his high hopes for his recovery.
