Olympian Franklin competes in first home meet

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — Olympic star Missy Franklin won the 100 backstroke and anchored California’s winning 400 medley relay team in her first collegiate home meet Friday.

Franklin helped the Golden Bears down Washington State 164-89 in the Pac-12 dual meet.

Franklin, who owns the world record in the 200 back, won the 100 back in 54.37 seconds.

In the medley relay, Franklin hit the water for the final lap in third place. She went 48.09 and the Golden Bears won the event by 45 seconds.

Spanish Olympian Marina Garcia also is a freshman at Cal. She won the 1,000 free in 10:20.53 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:17.51.
