EUGENE, Ore. — Residents who live in a neighborhood south of the University of Oregon have offered the city of Eugene $40,000 to buy a camera that will help catch lead-footed motorists.
The Register-Guard reports that a couple of years ago, the city installed rapidly flashing pedestrian crossing lights near Edison Elementary School. But some residents say traffic has been increasing, and speeding motorists are even more of a problem than before.
About 15 residents are willing to spend $40,000 for a camera to catch speeders on Agate Street.
The cameras rely on radar to detect motorists’ speeds and then snap photos of the license plate. Such cameras are generally found in big cities. There are none in the Eugene-Springfield area.
