BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Andy Summerlin threw for a school record 495 yards to go along with three touchdowns as Samford beats Georgia Southern in a 44-34 shootout.

Samford overcame a 21-10 halftime deficit with a furious second half. Fabian Truss ran for two third quarter touchdowns to give the Bulldogs (4-2, 2-0 Southern) a 25-21 lead near the end of the third quarter.

Georgia Southern (3-2, 1-2) responded with a 27-yard rushing score by Jerick McKinnon, giving the Eagles a 27-25 lead. The Bulldogs weren’t down for long as Summerlin found Karel Hamilton for a 69-yard touchdown. Summerlin then hit Kelsey Pope for a 58-yard score after a Georgia Southern punt.

The Eagles came back with a 75-yard drive, capped by another McKinnon score. He finished with 181 yards.

The comeback fell short as Samford was able to kill the clock, kicking a field goal with 12 seconds left to finish the scoring.
