Slide show to tell Cape Horn trail history

STEVENSON — A slide show on the creation and construction of Cape Horn trail will begin at 7 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Hegewald Center, 710 Rock Creek Drive.

The 7.5-mile route in western Skamania County has evolved from a controversial user-made trail to a popular hiking route managed by the U.S. Forest Service.

The event is hosted by the Washington Trails Association, Cape Horn Conservancy, Forest Service and Friends of the Gorge.

Steelhead seminars slated at Fishermen’s Marine and Outdoor

PORTLAND — Two free seminars dealing with winter steelhead fishing are scheduled this fall at Fishermen’s Marine and Outdoor, 1120 N. Hayden Meadows Drive.

Guide Steve Leonard and Steve Lynch of Pro-Cure will discuss bait preparations at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 23.

Guide Chris Nordling will offer fishing tips and techniques beginning at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 4.

Stevens Pass has one-day ski season opener

LEAVENWORTH, Wash. — Stevens Pass ski area had a special one-day season on Saturday to take advantage of 2-feet of unseasonable snowfall.

More than 400 skiers participated.

“We couldn’t just let this snow go to waste, so we scrambled to put together a six-feature rail park and invited the public to come up and have a little fun,’’ said Nate Escalona, marketing manager.

The ski area 78 miles east of Seattle at the crest of the Cascade Mountains. Stevens Pass typically opens for winter operation in late November or early December..
