49ers’ secondary soaring now

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Carlos Rogers has seen the San Francisco 49ers come a long way in their secondary during his three seasons with the team.

Even he has to admit that the revamped unit is playing as well as it ever has during that span.

That’s still not quite good enough for Rogers and his crew. The 49ers rank second in the NFL in pass defense, but that only says to the Pro Bowl cornerback they still can do a little better.

San Francisco limited the Houston Texans to 182 yards passing and made three interceptions during last week’s 34-3 rout, two of them by nickel back Tramaine Brock, who was voted NFC defensive player of the week for his performance.

The 49ers (3-2) will be looking for more picks this week when they host the Arizona Cardinals (3-2) and quarterback Carson Palmer, whose nine interceptions are the second most in the NFL.
