Volunteers will gather this month for the third annual “The Butt Stops Here” cleanup to remove cigarette butts and other litter from parks.

The event will begin with a brief orientation at 10 a.m. Oct. 26 in the Bud Van Cleve Community Room at Luke Jensen Sports Park, 4000 N.E. 78th St. Volunteers will divide into small groups and fan out to parks and public areas in Vancouver and unincorporated Clark County.

Organizers will have a list of parks, but volunteers are encouraged to come to the event with a specific park in mind. Volunteers will need to provide their own transportation. Volunteers are also encouraged to bring their own gloves, but organizers will provide gloves and garbage bags.

At about 12:30 p.m., volunteers will return to the sports park to weigh bags of cigarette butts and litter. Lunch, courtesy of Blind Onion Pizza, will be served until 1 p.m.

During last year’s event, 55 volunteers collected 25 pounds of cigarette butts and another 12 bags of garbage.

Volunteers can sign up online at parkhero.org.
