ABERDEEN, Md. (AP) — Police have charged a man they say tried to carjack baseball great Cal Ripken’s mother in a bank parking lot in Maryland.

Aberdeen police announced Wednesday that they’ve charged 33-year-old Jesse Bowen of Havre de Grace with attempted armed robbery, attempted armed carjacking, assault and other offenses. He’s being held without bond.

Police say Bowen had a handgun when he approached 75-year-old Vi Ripken near NBRS Bank in Aberdeen, a town about 25 miles north of Baltimore, but she activated a key alarm and he left.

Aberdeen police spokesman Lt. Frederick Budnick says Ripken wasn’t hurt and officers arrested Bowen about two hours later.

Ripken was taken from her home at gunpoint last year and returned unharmed. He said Tuesday the two crimes don’t appear to be related.
