Missy Franklin wins Sportswoman of Year award

NEW YORK (AP) — Missy Franklin keeps piling up the awards.

The 18-year-old swimmer won the Sportswoman of the Year award presented Wednesday night by the Women’s Sports Foundation.

Franklin won four gold medals and a bronze at the 2012 London Olympics. She won a record six gold medals at the world championships two months ago in Barcelona, Spain.

The freshman at California was nominated along with Serena Williams, figure skater Mao Asada and wheelchair athlete Tatyana McFadden.

Los Angeles Sparks star Candace Parker won the team award. She averaged a WNBA-leading 25.7 points and earned league MVP honors.

The WNBA won the Billie Jean King Contribution Award and Melissa Stockwell earned the Wilma Rudolph Courage Award. Vivian Hao won the Annika Inspiration Award.
