PORTLAND — The Oregon State Athletic Commission has unanimously approved a rule requiring women to test negative for pregnancy before competing in boxing or mixed martial arts events.

The action taken Wednesday morning brings Oregon into line with industry standards.

The commission says about 10 women compete during each two-year budget cycle, so the cost of pregnancy tests and administrative overhead will be minimal.

The examining physician can waive the test if the fighter provides documentation that she has undergone a hysterectomy.
