OLYMPIA — The Washington Emergency Management Division says more than 800,000 people have registered through schools, businesses, agencies and families in Washington to take part in Thursday’s earthquake drill called The Great Washington ShakeOut.

They’ll drop, cover and hold at 10:17 a.m. Oct. 17.

A large earthquake at some point in the future is considered inevitable for the Northwest because of shifting plates in the earth’s crust. A sudden release would trigger an earthquake that could cause significant property damage and loss of life. A large quake also is likely to generate a tsunami, which threatens coastal areas.
