Winterhawks start road trip with victory

The Portland Winterhawks opened their five-game road trip Saturday with an 8-1 win against the Tri-City Americans in Western Hockey League action at Kennewick.

Seven different players scored for the Hawks (7-3-0-1) in the victory, their fourth straight win.

Chase De Leo scored two goals for Portland, and Nic Petan and Taylor Leier each had a goal and two assists. Brendan Leipsic and Derrick Pouliot had two assists.

Goaltender Brendan Burke earned the win with 23 saves on 24 shots

The five-game road trip continues Tuesday when the Hawks are in Lethbridge to take on the Hurricanes.

• The Vancouver Vipers tallied a season-high three goals, but remained winless on the Northern Pacific Hockey League season after a 6-3 loss at Eugene.

Cody Dettman had a goal and an assist, and Cisco Yslas and Peyton Frederickson each had unassisted goals for Vancouver (0-7).

The Vipers, who were outshot 50-12, led 2-1 after the first period.
