Letter: Obligation to family is now priority

The Columbian
Published: October 21, 2013, 5:00pm

Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, and her husband have given birth to a child with a condition, which includes the lack of kidneys, requiring constant care and treatment. Fortunately, they have insurance resources that cover the considerable expense of the intensive, innovative care the child is receiving. Understandably, the congresswoman is in California to be near her child during these procedures, which is likely be a long-term commitment. This has prevented her attendance in the halls of Congress, missing discussions and votes at a particularly important time for our country. The Congresswoman must acknowledge that her duties as the mother of this child do not allow fair and honest representation for her constituents here in Washington state and resign her office.
