ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — Bio Pro won the $70,000 Lure Stakes by 314 lengths in his first race in more than two months at Santa Anita on Sunday.
Ridden by Mario Gutierrez, Bio Pro ran a mile on the turf in 1:33.48 and paid $19.60, $8.20 and $5 at 8-1 odds. Bio Pro had been idle since Aug. 17 at Del Mar.
“It was a hot pace,” Gutierrez said. “My horse was sitting comfortable, not really pulling. It couldn’t have set up any better for us. He’s always had a big kick near the end, so the quick pace up front left me with plenty at the end.”
My Best Brother returned $6.20 and $3.40. El Commodore was another half-length back in third and paid $3.20 to show as the 2-1 favorite under Gary Stevens, who rode four winners on the card.
The victory, worth $45,000, increased Bio Pro’s career earnings to $159,690, with four wins in 15 starts.
