ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (AP) — Cleveland Indians two-time All-Star closer Chris Perez has pleaded no contest and been convicted of misdemeanor drug abuse for marijuana shipped to his home in the family dog’s name.

Perez withdrew his not guilty plea Tuesday in Rocky River Municipal Court and was found guilty and fined $250. He also was placed on probation and ordered to speak to youngsters about drugs.

Police were tipped off by postal inspectors to suspicious packages mailed to the Perez home. They say his wife, Melanie Perez, accepted two packages with about a third of pound of marijuana.

According to authorities, she has said the packages were intended for her dog.

Investigators say Perez told them that he had pot for personal use.

The related case against his wife is pending.
