BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — California safety Avery Sebastian will undergo surgery on his right Achilles tendon Thursday and will miss the remainder of the season.

Avery was injured in the first half of the Golden Bears’ season-opening 44-30 loss to Northwestern on Saturday. The junior defensive back, who missed a large chunk of training camp with a concussion, had 11 tackles.

Cal will also be without wide receiver Spencer Hagan, who retired from football after suffering a knee injury in 2012.

Defensive end Brennan Scarlett, who missed the opener, remains sidelined while recovering from a hand injury.
