Fircrest — Vancouver City Council’s community picnic on Aug. 26 brought in 264 pounds of donated food and $136 in cash to support the Share Backpack Program, which provides backpacks of healthy food to students in need. Instead of its regular meeting that day, the council chose to host the end-of-summer gathering at LeRoy Haagen Memorial Community Park. About 120 visited the park to support Share and chat with city leaders. “This event was a true testament to our community, braving the weather to come out and donate money and food to help their neighbors,” Vancouver Mayor Tim Leavitt said in a press release.
