DIAMOND POINT — Authorities believe a Native American skeleton found last month at Diamond Point in Clallam County may be at least 200 years old, but could be a lot older.
The Peninsula Daily News reports the remains were found by a contractor who was backfilling a hole on a privately owned lot.
The remains were found in the backfill material. Work on the site has been halted.
State physical anthropologist Guy Tasa says the bones could even be thousands of years old. He says the remains found were not enough to determine the gender and age of the person, but features of the skull and teeth indicate the person was Native American.
Nine area tribes have been notified. Tasa says they have expressed interest in leaving the remains where they are.
