This November, Washougal will decide whether to shift to the council-manager style of government. This governance style is used successfully in many cities across our region, and around the country. Many different reasons make a council-manager government a positive step for our community. It will result in a smaller, representative, consistent and accountable government for Washougal’s voters.
Smaller, with a mayor elected or appointed from among the council members. Washougal would also save around $25,000 on a mayoral salary.
Representative, through a manager who is guided by the consensus of seven elected officials, rather than the opinion of one.
Consistent, through a position staffed statistically longer — around seven years — than by a Washougal mayor, most of whom are not re-elected.
