GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) — Scottish boxer Ricky Burns has had surgery after breaking his jaw in a draw with Mexican challenger Raymundo Beltran in a WBO lightweight title fight.
Burns confirmed his injury on Twitter, with promoter Eddie Hearn adding Sunday on the social networking site that “Ricky is now in surgery to have a titanium plate in his jaw.”
He fought with the injury for 10 rounds and was floored in the eighth round on Saturday. However, Burns managed to secure a draw — to his surprise and that of his hometown fans in Glasgow — and retain his title after the third judge scored the fight 114-114.
