San Diego gets 38-35 win over Western New Mexico

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Mason Mills threw for 313 yards and three touchdowns to lead San Diego to a 38-35 victory over Western New Mexico Saturday night.

San Diego (1-1) jumped out to an early lead on Joe Ferguson’s 55-yard touchdown dash with nine minutes to play in the first quarter. He totaled 156 yards for the night.

The Western New Mexico Mustangs took the lead, 27-24, on Mitch Glassman’s 25-yard pass to Donald Byrd in the third quarter. San Diego came right back to retake the lead, 31-27, on a 4-yard pass from Mills to Ferguson. Bug Rivera scored on a 31-yard run to up the lead to 38-27 in the fourth. Western New Mexico cut the lead to 38-35 on a 4-yard pass from Mills to Byrd with 50 seconds remaining. San Diego recovered the ensuing onside kick.

Glasmann threw for four touchdowns and 351 yards in a losing effort.
