COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — No. 4 Ohio State remains dedicated to running the ball, first and foremost.
California? Not so much.
Coach Urban Meyer has said repeatedly the Buckeyes want to play quickly to wear down defenses, but will never be in the same ballpark with the Bears, whose starting quarterback has thrown 125 passes in two outings heading into Saturday’s game.
The Buckeyes aren’t exactly copying Woody Hayes’ between-the-tackles running game. Mixing dashes by quarterbacks Braxton Miller and Kenny Guiton with productive carries by tailback Jordan Hall, they stand 27th in the nation in rushing at 262 yards a game.
Meyer wants the Buckeyes to control the ball and move the chains, while also throwing in more big-gainers to keep the ball away from Cal.
