Homeless protesters arrested in Eugene, Ore.

EUGENE, Ore. — Police in Eugene have arrested at least four members of a homeless protest group.

During one confrontation Wednesday outside the Lane County Public Service Building, police allege a man kicked an officer in the head.

The Register-Guard reports that in addition to the arrests, police issued tickets to several other people for violating a city ordinance that bans camping on public property.

Members of the group known as SLEEPS accused police of taking a more aggressive approach to the protesters.

Police Lt. Eric Klinko has helped coordinate the police response to a series of camp-in protests this summer. While protesters and police have avoided major clashes, he says the relationship is “tenuous at best.”

Protesters want the city to overturn its camping ban on public property and designate public areas where homeless people can stay.
