Competition about to get tougher for Patriots

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — With an unimpressive offense, the New England Patriots are unbeaten following strong fourth quarters by the defense.

But their two wins came against rookie quarterbacks. That will change in their next game against Tampa Bay and Josh Freeman. The Buccaneers contest will begin a four-game stretch, in which the Patriots play two of the NFL’s top quarterbacks, Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons and Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints.

In their first two games, the Patriots outlasted the Buffalo Bills, with EJ Manuel at quarterback, and New York Jets, with Geno Smith under center.

But Patriots safety Steve Gregory says those rookies are pretty talented, and New England did a good job of keeping them in the pocket so they couldn’t run.
