Effie Trinket, Kharafa win stakes at Belmont

NEW YORK (AP) — Effie Trinket and Kharafa narrowly won the $150,000 turf stakes for New York-breds on Sunday at Belmont Park.

Effie Trinket beat Wholelottashakin by a neck in the John Hettinger for fillies and mares. Luis Saez was aboard for trainer Rick Violette as the 3-year-old improved to 5-4. She ran the 1-8 miles in 1:50.39, paying $9.40 to win.

Kharafa held off Lubash by a head in the Ashley T. Cole with Javier Castellano riding for trainer Tim Hills. The four-year-old gelding got his fifth win in 16 starts, paying $5.40 to win. The time was 1:49.21 for the same distance.
