INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Colts tight end Dwayne Allen will miss the rest of the season because of a hip injury.

The Colts already had lost starting running back Vick Ballard and starting left guard Donald Thomas to season-ending injuries. Ballard tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee last Thursday. Thomas has torn a quad tendon in his right leg and is scheduled for surgery on Thursday.

Allen started all 16 regular-season games as a rookie last season and caught 45 passes for 521 yards, earning a reputation as a solid pass catcher and blocker. He caught a touchdown pass in the season-opening win against Oakland but was inactive for last Sunday’s loss to the Miami Dolphins. The Colts had hoped he would heal with rest, but doctors said surgery would be required.
