Vania King of US advances in China

GUANGZHOU, China (AP) — American qualifer Vania King advanced to the semifinals of Guangzhou Open on Thursday when the three remaining seeded players were upset.

King beat eighth-seeded Monica Puig of Puerto Rico 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5).

Also, unseeded Yvonne Meusburger of Austria upset second-seeded Alize Cornet of France 6-4, 6-1. Zheng Jie beat third-seeded Laura Robson of Britain 1-6, 7-6 (6), 6-2.

Wild-card entry Shuai Zhang of China defeated Johanna Konta of Britain 7-5, 6-3.

King will face Zheng in the semifinals, and Shuai will face Meusburger.
