Hockinson hits its stride to get past Hudson’s Bay, 38-7

HOCKINSON — The Hockinson Hawks are off to a fast start in 2013, despite another slow start on the field.

Turnovers and missed opportunities marred the Hockinson’s first half against Hudson’s Bay on Friday, but the Hawks hit their stride after intermission for 38-7 win over the Eagles.

“Yeah, we’re unfortunately building a reputation as a second-half team,” quarterback Jess Krahn said. “I think we’ve just come out in these first three games with some jitters. But once we settle down, we start executing our plays.”

Curtis Baker’s 7-yard touchdown run at the end of the first quarter gave Hockinson a 7-0 lead. But the Hawks were unable to add on against the Eagles.

Fortunately for the Hawks, the Hockinson defense kept taking the ball away from Hudson’s Bay. The Hawks intercepted four passes in the first half, including three by Nick Barclay.

“I don’t know why they kept throwing at Nick,” Hockinson coach Brian Schott said. “He’s a pretty darn good player.”

Despite Hockinson’s best defensive efforts, Bay was able to score the first touchdown off the Hawks this season when Erik Ivanov caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Jeremy Matheny with 21 seconds left in the half, tying the game at 7-7.

But the second half belonged to Hockinson, especially on the ground.

A 9-yard touchdown run by Baker helped Hockinson take a 15-7 lead early in the third quarter. Then a 54-yard pass from Krahn to Cameron Loos broke the game open.

Baker finished with 139 yards rushing on 25 carries.

“We’ve really been struggling to run the ball this year,” Schott said. “So it was great to see the guys up front get some push and open up some running lanes.”
