FLORENCE, Italy (AP) — British challenger Brian Cookson says Friday’s UCI presidential election is a “crossroads moment” for cycling, adding that the “shennanigans” that have marred the sport under rival Pat McQuaid are no longer acceptable.

Cookson, the president of British Cycling, pledges to rebuild the sport’s image and governance after the Lance Armstrong doping affair that has stained McQuaid’s two-term tenure.

Cookson says “I want to make our sport one where people can admire their heroes without doubt.”

With questions hanging over McQuaid’s status, Cookson says he will not take on the job by default if the UCI congress rejects McQuaid’s nomination and will seek an election even if he is the only candidate.

Cookson adds that if he wins he doesn’t foresee “any involvement” for UCI honorary president Hein Verbruggen.
