My wife and I live near Lucia Falls, adjacent to the southern section of the proposed Yacolt Mountain-area surface-mining overlay site. Clark County gave less than one week notice of the surface-mining overlay meeting held Sept. 19, which I first learned about from a neighbor.
Although to start mining, they say a company would need to go through the permitting process, fact is, once the overlay is approved, I think it’s near impossible to stop a permit from being granted. That would devastate our peaceful, pristine setting here along the East Fork of the Lewis River, as beautiful as any state or national park, home to bald eagle, mountain beaver, and sensitive fish habitat at Lucia Falls Park.
My wife and I say, “no way” to surface mining overlay.
