DES MOINES — Police say a fleeing suspect stabbed a Kent police dog that tracked him down Tuesday night in Des Moines.

The German shepherd named Kato is in stable condition after surgery at a veterinary hospital.

KOMO reports that the incident began with a fight between two brothers and one beating the other with a tool. The injured brother was taken to a hospital with head injuries. Officers spotted the other brother a short time later, and he took off.

The K9 unit from the Kent Police Department was brought in and the dog found the man a short time later on the Des Moines Creek Trail.

Police says the dog was stabbed with a pocket knife. The suspect was arrested and treated at Highline Medical Center for dog bites.
