SEATTLE — Doctors say a man who pulled himself out of his burning car in the aftermath of a fiery March 18 news helicopter crash in Seattle has undergone two surgeries for burns on his torso and arm.
KING-TV reports Dr. Nicole Gibran said Tuesday that the healing progress of a burn on 38-year-old Richard Newman’s face will dictate when he leaves Harborview Medical Center.
Daniel Jung says his partner doesn’t remember any part of the accident. Newman was driving to work when the helicopter crashed on his car.
A security guard at Fisher Plaza ran to help Newman when the man emerged in flames from the smashed car. Brian Post tells KOMO-TV that Newman didn’t panic but did “everything he needed to, to survive.” Post beat back the flames on Newman’s body.
The crash killed both men on board the helicopter — pilot Gary Pfitzner and former KOMO-TV photographer Bill Strothman.
