Mitchell Pinney of Hockinson soccer was voted The Columbian’s high school spring sports athlete of the week, sponsored by Athletes Corner, for the week ending March 29.

Pinney collected 40 percent of the 790 votes cast by fans to beat out Dakody Clemmer of Mountain View baseball, who had 39 percent.

Pinney scored all three goals in a 3-2 league-opening win over Washougal, and added another goal in a win over Kelso.

The other nominees were James Phillips of Prairie boys track and field, Connie Wang of Camas golf and Aubrey Ward-El of Skyview girls track and field.

Nominees and the online ballot are posted at www.360preps.com each Monday and voting continues until 8 p.m. Thursday.

Athletes may be elected player of the week once during the regular season, and no athlete can be nominated for the honor in consecutive weeks.

Because of spring break, the next vote will not be until April 14 for the two-week period of March 31-April 12.
