The city of Kalama says it has approved the Port of Kalama’s proposal to annex 260 acres for business and recreational development purposes.

The annexation will make room for the Spencer Creek Business Park and a new recreational facility, Haydu Park.

The business park, supporting a mix of light industrial, office, commercial and retail uses, will encompass about 70 acres and more than 500,000 square feet of space when fully built.

The port expects the business park to add “more family-wage jobs here,” Mark Wilson, the port’s executive director, said in a news release.

With Haydu Park, the port plans to replace and expand the community’s fairgrounds and athletic fields on port property. The new facility will include 24 acres of fairgrounds, as well as baseball and soccer fields — up from the current 8 acres. That will allow baseball and soccer teams to play simultaneously.
