Although mail-in registration closed Friday for the Klineline Kids Fishing event at Salmon Creek Regional Park, unregistered children can still participate as walk-ins during next weekend's event. Children get to fish at Klineline Pond and learn about water safety and the outdoors. The free event, which started in 2000, typically draws thousands of participants each year.
Children with special needs will fish at the park, 1112 N.E. 117th St., on Friday, and other children ages 5 to 14 will fish on Saturday.
Each child will get a fishing rod and reel, and bait, along with an event T-shirt. Kids fish in 45-minute sessions throughout the day between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Other hands-on activities at the park include archery and educational kiosks. Prizes are awarded to the child who catches the largest and smallest fish during each session. Bicycles are awarded hourly, and Fire District 6 provides each bicycle winner with a bicycle helmet.
