Bailey King of Vancouver placed third in the discus throw at an international youth track and field meet on Saturday in Miramar, Fla.

King moved up to third place with his final throw at the U.S. Area Youth Olympic Selection Trials, a meet that included 16- and 17-year-olds from the U.S., Canada, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Puerto Rico. Participants were competing to be selected to the Team for the Americas, which will compete in August at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.

A total of 31 athletes will eventually be selected for the Team for the Americas.

A Union High sophomore, King threw the discus 174 feet, 9 inches on his sixth and last attempt of the competition. The winning mark was 178-10 by Tyler Merkley, a high school junior at Los Osos, Calif.
