Letter: Stand guard of radical objections

Tim Nickles’ April 1 letter “Predictable protest aired by NRA” is full of revisionist history and attacks against the National Rifle Association that are typical of the political left. First he states the NRA objections to Vivek Murthy’s nomination as lies and distortions. The public and published record of Murthy is fact — declaring gun violence and gun ownership as a “mental health” issue and as surgeon general he is likely to promote his anti-gun ownership policies.

Nickles tries to rewrite history by declaring that the Second Amendment was written to support slave patrols and the KKK. The Second Amendment arose from the British disarming Americans in the time leading up to the revolution. The first state to declare a civilian right to arms (1776) was Pennsylvania, a nonslave state. This all occurred before the Second Amendment was drafted. When slaves were emancipated, the Freedmen Bureau Act provided emancipated slaves the right to bear arms.

Nickles has chosen to demonize those he does not agree with because he has no legitimate argument to make. We must stand guard against these “rules for radicals” tactics of the political left.
