Letter: Hypocritical attitude toward sex

The Columbian
Published: April 9, 2014, 5:00pm

The April 2 online article, “Vancouver massage parlor investigated: Police trying to determine if it is a front for illegal brothel,” left me questioning the residents of that neighborhood. I wouldn’t be inclined to be alarmed if all of the men showing up were dressed nicely and drove fancy cars. Obviously, this place is catering only to those who can afford it and not just your regular Joe-Schmoes on the street looking for a prostitute. Our society is a bit hypocritical when it comes to sex. Sex sells, as the media shows us time and time again, yet when it comes to paying for sex, somehow that’s where the line is drawn. Doesn’t it seem strange that we as a nation are OK with being bombarded by half-naked women on TV, yet somehow are not OK with this instance of people seeking out satisfaction in the company of a stranger?

Maybe it’s time for this country to start thinking about reformation of ways sex workers are handled. Maybe it’s time to let these people who make a living selling their bodies do it legally.
