Letter: Illogical argument dismissed

The Columbian
Published: April 19, 2014, 5:00pm

In his April 16 letter “Before remarking, read full decision,” Rick Hauser asserts the rights of corporations as “fictitious persons.” Charlie Brown, Willy Loman, and Superman are also all fictitious persons. Would he grant them the same constitutional rights?

He further argues that corporations can be prosecuted for crimes. Do they serve jail time when convicted? Must they register for the Selective Service? Do they vote in elections? His arguments are specious at best, and more betray his belief that we live in an oligarchy and that government “of the corporation, by the corporation, and for the corporation” is a desirable condition.

I’m a person, Mr. Hauser. I vote. And I will never vote for a corporation to govern my country.
