METALINE FALLS — A closed zinc and lead mine will reopen in northeastern Washington.

Teck American Inc. said Wednesday it will reopen the Pend Oreille Mine by the end of the year.

The company says about 80 people are already working at the underground mine near Metaline Falls, and the workforce should grow to about 240 by December.

The Pend Oreille Mine closed in 2009, amid tumbling prices for zinc and lead. Industrial metals took a hit from the global recession. Now, zinc prices are on the upswing.

The company says the mine has a five-year operating life, with the potential to extend operations.
