Bus service adds weekends in Gorge

Skamania County is expanding its bus service for the next several months to offer rides on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the west side of the Columbia River Gorge.

West End Transit normally runs twice a day five days a week, plus an additional run Fridays. Starting this weekend, the bus will run four times Saturdays and Sundays through Oct. 15.

The bus stops in Carson, Stevenson, North Bonne-ville, and Fisher’s Landing in Vancouver plus other locations. The route also swings by a number of resorts and recreational areas, including Bonneville Hot Springs, Skamania Lodge and the Pacific Crest Trail near the Bridge of the Gods.

Funding for the new schedule comes from grants from Western Federal Lands, the Washington State Department of Transportation, Friends of the Columbia Gorge, Stevenson and tourism funds for North Bonneville and Skamania County. With a route designed to provide access to federal lands and recreation areas, officials hope the expanded service will relieve congestion at trailheads.
