Recently we purchased a used vehicle for $5,000. When we went to the Department of Licensing to transfer the title we were told that fair market value for that vehicle was $9,000 and that is what we would have to pay taxes on. I could not find a single car like ours for anywhere near that price on craigslist.org. After spending two hours online and another trip to DOL we were able to print a Kelley Blue Book price of $6,316, which they accepted. Then, even though the emissions were just done in May, we were told that we had to pay $15 and do that again. After paying taxes on $1,316 more than we paid for the car and $15 for emissions we did not even receive tags good for a year from the time of our title transfer, instead we will have to pay for tags again next May.
We now understand why people are so angry with our government as all of these rip-offs were made by a department of revenue. In the meantime, they take more of our money than they were entitled to and we continue to drive on roads in horrible condition.
Wouldn’t it be nice if we could determine what fair market value was for the tax dollars spent and pay taxes accordingly?
