Lette: So many laws lead to false security

Rick Halle is in the news because he exercised his Second Amendment right, reported the Aug. 8 story “Election observer shows up with gun.” Of course, I knew at some point someone would complain.

I was especially moved by the term “death at his hip” in an Aug. 13 letter “Open bullying observed” from Bill and Marilyn Feddeler. Guns aren’t death anymore than cars, knives, or hands.

To anyone uncomfortable with someone exercising this right, which has been fought for with the greatest of sacrifices, I direct you to two constitutions, Washington state and the United States. It is not illegal to open carry a sidearm in this state. Because a person is “uncomfortable” with something does not necessitate writing of new laws. Yet it happens and it’s this act that should strike fear in one’s heart. This is where this nation has erred, by pandering to the complainers.

If you haven’t been paying attention, our rights are being eroded daily in this country. Without our Second Amendment right, we have no way of protecting any of our other rights.

State Initiative 594 is one more step in taking a citizen’s right of protection. Read it carefully and do some research before you vote. It sounds good, but it won’t help. If these laws actually helped, we’d not have to pass another. And we have so many on the books now that it may provide a false sense of security.
