Weather Eye: Still summery, but we’re thinking of fall and winter

From the ocean beaches to the deserts and plateaus of our great state, it was summer in its finest fashion yesterday. OK, a little too hot for me and many of you, but one for the memory banks when it is freezing cold out this winter.

It seems like an endless summer, doesn’t it? It can go on for another two months in my book. And you never know; September and the first part of October can be pleasant weather.

We get those offshore east winds with clear skies and sunshine. And the bonus is that the shorter hours of daylight generally make great sleeping weather as things cool off.

Indian summer this year? I would bet on it.

I see the Old Farmer’s Almanac is broad-brushing the great Northwest with a chilly winter season and near-normal precipitation. Maybe more lowland snow this winter? Stay tuned. I already informed you that nature’s critters are very busy gathering their winter food store.

Meanwhile, this weatherman is still focused on summer and will play along with the grasshopper and fiddle away while the sun shines. Yeah, I cringe at the retail Halloween and Thanksgiving displays — and one retailer I visited the other day had … yes … Christmas items out. Oh, please.

Two thoughts on our summer weather. I got feedback from a recent column and there are some readers out who are ready for autumn and the cooler weather. Others hope it lingers a while. What side of the fence are you on?

OK, hot today and Wednesday, and then the advertised cool-down begins. I expect it to be in the 70s over the Labor Day weekend. Maybe, just maybe, some showers Saturday and Sunday. Labor Day may be pleasant.

One outlier is Hurricane Marie, which may push some moisture our way after it dwindles into an unnamed disturbance in the Pacific.

I’d welcome a good rain for one day, if we could then have summer return.
