SALEM, Ore. — A Marion County sheriff’s officer says a truck driver, 64, escaped unhurt when the cattle feed truck he was driving was hit by a northbound Amtrak train Monday afternoon at a rail crossing south of Salem.

Sgt. Chris Baldridge says the train was damaged but was able to continue on to Portland. No one aboard the train was hurt.

Baldridge says the truck sustained heavy damage.

The spokesman says truck driver Lynn Simonds of Salem told officers he didn’t see any train coming and began crossing at the intersection. When he did see the train, he said, he tried to clear the tracks but couldn’t do so fast enough.

Baldridge says the driver was cited for failing to obey a traffic control device.
